Boating Safety Basics
The Coast Guard reports that boating accidents are on the rise, and approximately 75% of all recorded accidents involve operator error. Preferred Care wants you to have fun - and stay safe - on the water this summer. By preparing with the right training and equipment, and being aware of what to avoid when boating, you can prevent boating accidents.
What are the most common causes of boating accidents?
Most accidents are caused by a failure to use common sense on the water:
Overloading the boat
Disregarding bad weather or small craft advisories
Not looking out for other boats and obstacles
Falling overboard
Refueling unsafely
Alcohol use
Here's how you can protect yourself on the water:
If you plan to pilot a boat, take a boating safety class. You'll learn the "rules of the road" as well as what supplies and equipment to have on hand, safe load limits and what to do in an emergency.
Take lessons in swimming and basic water survival skills.
Don't overdo it. Fatigue can sneak up on you when you're far from land.
Pay attention to storm and small craft advisories. Don't go out when it's not safe.
Don't let alcohol make you cause a tragedy. Don't drink on a boat or before going out.
