Healthy Back Tip

The exercise ball is a treatment option for people who suffer from back pain. The types of exercises you use are designed to help prevent further episodes of back pain. The exercise ball helps to strengthen and develop your core muscles; these are the muscles that support your back. Over time, the back and abdominal muscles you use to maintain your balance on the exercise ball are strengthened. Using the exercise ball can also help improve your sense of balance and your stability.

It is theorized that the types of movement induced by using the exercise ball may also help reduce pain by stimulating the body to increase production of natural pain inhibitors.

If you try the exercise ball just sit on it the first few times you use it. Just balancing your self can be a challenge. Don't bounce when sitting on an exercise ball; it can be jarring to your back. Until you feel comfortable sitting on the exercise ball, keep it slightly under inflated, it will be more stable and easier to balance yourself. When you become more comfortable balancing on the ball then inflate to its recommended size.

As with any exercise program check with your physician or physical therapist before you begin. Your physical therapist can help you choose the exercise ball that best fits you and the exercises you should do.
