Dealing with Depression Tip #5
The Power of Thinking Positively
Research has shown that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for those with anxiety and depression. It teaches you that the way you think about things, people and events affects the way you feel. CBT can help you identify common ways of thinking that can lead to depression.
For example, you may have the tendency to jump to conclusions (form an opinion without knowing the facts), magnify (blow things out of proportion) and/or engage in “all or nothing” thinking (see no middle ground). Perhaps you take things personally and blame yourself for things over which you have no control, or you blame others. You may think something is terrible, horrible or awful rather than it being simply “bad”.
A professional, licensed to practice behavioral health services, can help you replace irrational thoughts with rational ones and help you feel more positive about life. These professionals could be psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, or nurse practitioners.
You can call the Behavioral Health member line at 585-327-2477 or 1-800-836-1430 for a list of professionals in your area who are licensed to offer the service(s) that are right for you.
