Ordering Your Prescriptions and Understanding Your Pharmacy Coverage
with Preferred Care's Pharmacy Benefits Manager (PBM)

Medco is Preferred Care's contracted pharmacy benefits manager for all of our HMO health plans. Just like Preferred Care, the Medco Member Service team is dedicated to helping you live well by making it as simple and easy as possible for you to get the medications you need. If you have questions about your pharmacy benefits, the Medco Member Service team can explain your Preferred Care prescription coverage.

Medco's Member Services can help you with:

  • Paperless prescriptions
  • Mail-order prescriptions
  • Out-of-area pharmacy coverage
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Diabetic drugs and supplies

Note: If you are a Preferred Care Option member, you must present your Medicaid card to the pharmacy when filling a prescription because your drugs are covered by Medicaid.

Medco's Member Services team can be contacted at 1-800-233-7063.
TTY users may call 1-800-759-1089.
Please have your Preferred Care membership card and number handy when you call.

Preferred Care's Paperless Prescription Process is Simple and Easy!
Preferred Care's paperless prescription process makes obtaining prescriptions easy - just show your Preferred Care membership card each time you fill a prescription! This convenient service helps you obtain prescriptions efficiently at over 300 local retail pharmacies, including:

  • CVS
  • Eckerd (formerly Fays)
  • KMart
  • Rite Aid
  • Tops
  • Wal-Mart
  • Wegmans
  • And many other chain or independent pharmacies near you

For covered drugs, you will pay your copayment/coinsurance, and you're all set. Your pharmacist will take care of the rest. Depending on your level of coverage, you may have to meet a deductible-but even deductibles are tracked by your pharmacist.

Mail Order Prescriptions
Have you ever enjoyed the convenience of shopping by mail? Preferred Care brings you that same convenience through our mail-order prescription program, managed by Medco. Available to those whose prescription drug coverage includes the mail-order benefit, this program delivers your prescriptions directly to your door and saves money, too.

Drugs Available by Mail to Commercial Members
If you take a medication on an ongoing basis and wish to know if it is available to purchase by mail-order, check to see if the medicine is in one of the categories or contact the Medco Member Service team at 1-800-233-7063.
TTY users may call 1-800-759-1089.

Refilling Your Mail Order Prescriptions
Once you have filled an original prescription by mail, you may order refills by logging in to the Medco Pharmacy Services Web site for Preferred Care members. You will need your prescription number and your Preferred Care membership number.

If you prefer, your mail order prescriptions can be refilled by calling Medco at
1-800-233-7063. TTY users may call 1-800-759-1089. Use their automated refill system to order refills by phone 24 hours a day.

Out-of-Area Pharmacy Coverage
If you are traveling and find that you need a prescription filled, Medco's Member Services can locate the nearest pharmacy that participates in Preferred Care's nationwide network of pharmacy providers. Using a participating pharmacy may prevent additional out-of-pocket costs.
Oral Contraceptives
Most of our health plan members receive coverage for oral contraceptives, though some benefit packages do not include this coverage. Please consult your health plan materials for available coverage. Oral contraceptives are available through our mail order program with Medco.
Diabetic Supplies
Diabetic supplies and medications (including insulin, oral agents, test strips, lancets, syringes, and glucometers) are covered for most Preferred Care members. Prescriptions may be filled locally or through our mail order program with Medco. The exact coverage for diabetic supplies will depend on your contract and pharmacy riders - copays and deductibles will vary.
